kali ma

The Tantric Goddess, Kali Ma, is the foremost power of time that we experience. Moving and shaking everything into existence, Kali is the deity of time’s terrifying image—the slayer; the great mother womb from which we are all created and we will all return to.

Kali emerged in the tradition of Hinduism in the sixth century C.E. in the central Sanskrit goddess treatise called the Devi-Mahatmaya (Glorification of the Goddess). The Devi-Mahatmaya is a narration of three stories celebrating the Great Goddess Durga, the Maha Devi, who is not an ordinary woman or even a normal goddess. She is a Great Goddess, known to be ever virgin and who remains fully independent of male control. The single and ultimate force of the universe is within her and she offers a kind of wisdom and knowledge that nourishes the world.

Kali is at once a life-consuming force and a life-giving force. She is the unstoppable Mother, who endlessly destroys demons, thus leading her children to realize their true nature.
